I found Elliott’s practical advice so helpful. He has a lot of experience in the field and is so willing to share it so that other designers can follow in his footsteps and prosper as he has. He offers many different paths to making it in the freelance world, so if you, say, aren’t good at marketing yourself, there are other options! I love the style the book is written in, too. As I read, I felt like I was having a casual conversation with Elliott, not reading some dry, lofty advice from someone who forgets what it was like to be where I am (at the beginning). He takes a holistic approach, too, not just discussing the facts, but also the more intangible side to freelancing, like how big of a role fear can play and what to do about it.

Elliott takes a different angle to his advice and invites the readers to actively engage in what he is suggesting by making lists, finishing sentences and visualizing what they want their futures to look like. One thing I found very encouraging was Elliott’s discussion of the freelance mindset and lifestyle, which is very different from the corporate “be productive, work hard” world we have probably all been raised in! He covers so many things freelancers need to know, including gaining clients through networking, social media and cold calling, and even gives sample scripts, which I found took a lot of the apprehension out of making calls or sending emails. He covers every possible senario and everything is very step by step, an approach I appreciated. Elliott is extremely encouraging, which is so important for someone just starting out to hear or read! It’s like having a friend and mentor to go back to whenever you need help. By the end, I’m sure you’ll find your money well spent.

Unlike other books on freelancing, Set Yourself Freelance shows you how to become a successful freelancer from the inside out. For me this was the most moving aspect of the book. I have gone back and forth from a “9-5” style job with a company to being out on my own looking for freelance work and the hardest part for me is changing my mindset.
